Canopy Cover Analysis

Canopy cover analysis is a method for quantifying the proportion of ground or sky obscured by vegetation, providing a useful measure of forest structure and environmental conditions. It works by sampling views or images of a site and distinguishing canopy from gaps using approaches such as field-based visual estimates, hemispherical photography, or remote-sensing data. The resulting measurements help researchers assess light availability, habitat structure, vegetation change, and ecosystem condition. In environmental studies, canopy cover analysis supports forest monitoring, restoration planning, biodiversity research, and evaluation of how land-use change influences microclimate and ecological processes.
