Compact Shield Design

Compact shield design is the engineering of small, space-efficient barriers that protect equipment, people, or sensitive materials from environmental hazards while limiting added mass and volume. It works by combining suitable shielding materials, enclosure geometry, and layered protection to reduce the transmission of radiation, heat, particles, moisture, or electromagnetic interference, depending on the threat. In environmental and applied research, these designs support resilient sensors, monitoring instruments, portable analytical systems, and spacecraft technologies operating under demanding conditions. Effective compact shielding can improve measurement reliability, extend device service life, and enable protective systems where conventional, larger barriers are impractical.

With the advent of small, low-cost environmental sensors, it is now possible to deploy high-density networks of sensors to measure hyper localized temperature variation. Here, we provide a detailed methodology for constructing a compact version of a previously described custom-fabricated radiation shield for use with inexpensive thermochrons.

Compact Bone

2025

Most bones contain compact and spongy osseous tissue, but their distribution and concentration vary based on the bone's overall function. Compact bone, also called cortical bone, is the denser, stronger of the two types of bone tissue. It is found under the periosteum and in the diaphyses of long bones, where it provides support and protection. The microscopic structural unit of compact bone is called an osteon, or haversian system. Each osteon is composed of concentric rings of calcified...

Compacting Factor test

The compacting factor test is a method used to assess the workability of concrete. It is especially suitable for concrete mixes containing aggregates up to one and a half inches in size. This test involves specialized equipment consisting of two truncated cone-shaped hoppers and a cylinder, all with polished interior surfaces to minimize friction. The procedure begins by placing concrete into the upper hopper without any compaction. Once filled, the bottom door of this hopper is opened,...
