Conductivity Temperature Sensor

A conductivity temperature sensor is an instrument that measures a fluid’s electrical conductivity and temperature, providing two complementary indicators of water chemistry and physical conditions. It applies an electrical signal across electrodes to determine how readily dissolved ions carry current, while the temperature measurement supports correction because conductivity changes with temperature. In environmental monitoring, these sensors help assess salinity, dissolved substances, and changes in freshwater, groundwater, coastal, and wastewater systems. Combined conductivity and temperature data improve water-quality surveys, identify mixing or contamination patterns, and support continuous observation of aquatic environments.

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Dana Lashley - College of William and Mary Demonstration by: Matt Smith When new bonds are formed in the course of a chemical reaction, it requires that the involved species (atoms or molecules) come in very close proximity and collide into one another. The collisions between these species are more frequent and effective the higher the speed at which these molecules are moving. A widely used rule of thumb, which has its roots in the Arrhenius equation1, states that...

We demonstrate use of a fiber optic distributed sensor for mapping the temperature field of mixing air jets. The Rayleigh scattering-based sensor generates thousands of data points along a single fiber to provide exceptional spatial resolution that is unattainable with traditional sensors such as thermocouples.

Accurately measuring temperature and water content of the upper 5 mm of the soil surface can improve our understanding of environmental controls on biological, chemical, and physical processes. Here we describe a protocol for manufacturing, calibrating, and conducting measurements with soil surface temperature and moisture sensors.
