Ellipsoidal Particle Fabrication

Ellipsoidal particle fabrication is the production of particles with elongated, anisotropic shapes rather than conventional spheres, enabling control over how they move, interact, and assemble. These particles can be formed by deforming spherical droplets or polymer particles through stretching, template-based processing, or controlled flow, followed by solidification or stabilization of the altered shape. In environmental research, ellipsoidal particles help model the transport and deposition of suspended matter in water, soil, and porous media. Their tunable aspect ratio and surface properties also support studies of pollutant capture, colloidal stability, filtration, and particle-based sensing.

Geoid and Ellipsoid

The Earth's shape is best described as an ellipsoid, a slightly flattened sphere created by rotating an ellipse around its minor axis. This flattening results in the polar axis being about 21 kilometers shorter than the equatorial axis. In contrast, the geoid represents the Earth's gravitational shape and aligns with the mean sea level (MSL). The geoid is an irregular equipotential surface where gravity is perpendicular at every point. Variations in Earth's mass distribution cause geoid...

Acoustofluidic devices use ultrasonic waves within microfluidic channels to manipulate, concentrate and isolate suspended micro and nanoscopic entities. This protocol describes the fabrication and operation of such a device supporting bulk acoustic standing waves to focus particles in a central streamline without the aid of sheath fluids.
