Thermal Conductivity Detector

A Thermal Conductivity Detector (TCD) is a gas chromatography detector that identifies compounds by measuring how they alter the thermal conductivity of a carrier-gas stream. As analytes elute from the column, they pass over a heated filament or thermistor, changing heat loss and producing an electrical signal relative to a reference flow of pure carrier gas. TCDs respond to many inorganic and organic gases, are generally nondestructive, and require no compound-specific labeling. In environmental sciences, they support analysis of permanent gases and volatile pollutants in air, soil gas, and water samples, helping researchers monitor emissions, contamination, and atmospheric composition.

2023

Source: Elise S.D. Buki, Danielle N. Beatty, and Taylor D. Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT The laser flash method (LFA) is a technique used to measure thermal diffusivity, a material specific property. Thermal diffusivity (α) is the ratio of how much heat is conducted relative to how much heat is stored in a material. It is related to thermal conductivity (), how much heat is transferred through a material due to a temperature...

CdSe-SnSe nanocomposites are produced by consolidating surface-engineered SnSe particles. A simple aqueous synthesis is employed to produce SnSe particles. Coating SnSe particles with CdSe molecular complexes allows for controlling grain size and increasing the number of defects present in the nanocomposite, thus lowering the thermal conductivity.
