Nitrogen Gas Hypoxia

Nitrogen gas hypoxia is a low-oxygen state produced by replacing or diluting atmospheric oxygen with nitrogen gas, an inert gas that does not itself support cellular respiration. As oxygen availability falls, mitochondrial electron transport and ATP production become limited, while oxygen-sensitive signaling pathways can alter transcription through regulators such as hypoxia-inducible factors. In genetics research, controlled nitrogen exposure provides a reproducible way to examine how cells and organisms sense oxygen deprivation, regulate gene expression, and adapt to metabolic stress. These studies help connect genotype with hypoxia tolerance and inform research on development, disease mechanisms, and stress-response pathways.

The Nitrogen Cycle

2019

Nitrogen atoms, present in all proteins and DNA, are recycled between abiotic and biotic components of the ecosystem. However, the primary form of nitrogen on Earth is nitrogen gas, which cannot be used by most animals and plants. Thus, nitrogen gas must first be converted into a usable form by nitrogen-fixing bacteria before it can be cycled through other living organisms. The use of nitrogen-containing fertilizers and animal waste products in human agriculture has greatly influenced the...

We introduce a novel hypoxic chamber system for use with aquatic organisms such as frog and zebrafish embryos. Our system is simple, robust, cost-effective and allows the induction and sustainment of hypoxia in vivo and for up to 48 h. We present 2 reproducible methods to monitor the effectiveness of hypoxia.
