Cecum Tissue

Cecum tissue is the specialized lining and supporting tissue of the cecum, a pouch at the junction of the small and large intestines that helps coordinate barrier defense and microbial interactions. Its epithelial cells, mucus layer, resident immune cells, and gut microbiota work together to detect microbial patterns, restrict pathogen access, and regulate local inflammation. In immunology and infection research, cecum tissue helps investigators examine host-microbe relationships, intestinal immune responses, and tissue changes during bacterial or parasitic disease. Studying its structure and function can clarify how mucosal barriers maintain homeostasis and how infection disrupts intestinal health.

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN Many animal experiments rely on final data collection time points that are gathered from the harvesting and testing of organs and tissues. The use of appropriate methods for the collection of organs and tissues can impact the quality of the samples and the analysis of the data that is gleaned for the testing of the tissues. The method of euthanasia of the animal can also impact the quality of...

Source: Lo, B. C., et al. Chronic Salmonella Infection Induced Intestinal Fibrosis. J. Vis. Exp. (2019)The video demonstrates the quantification of bacterial load in a mouse model of chronic infection with streptomycin-resistant Salmonella typhimurium. Following euthanasia and sterile dissection, cecal and splenic tissues are harvested, homogenized with steel beads to release bacteria, and serially diluted. Dilutions are plated on selective agar, and visible colonies are counted to estimate...

Accurate identification and location of epithelial cells along the intestinal mucosal lining are essential to define different cell lineages. Proper imaging of intestinal tissues is crucial for identification of protein expression patterns with maximum resolution. This study aims to delineate the optimal methods and conditions for processing mouse intestinal tissues.
