Field Sampling

Field sampling is the systematic collection of specimens and environmental information outside a laboratory to characterize biological conditions, populations, or disease processes. In immunology and infection research, investigators select representative sites or participants, collect materials such as swabs, blood, tissue, or environmental samples using standardized and often aseptic procedures, then preserve and transport them under conditions that maintain pathogen and biomarker integrity. Careful recording of location, timing, host characteristics, and exposure conditions links laboratory measurements to real-world contexts. These samples support pathogen surveillance, transmission studies, immune-response analysis, outbreak investigation, and evaluation of how infections vary across populations and environments.

2026

Reliable and accurate forms of field-deployable DNA analysis are crucial for many industries. This paper offers two methods for environmental microbial analysis in the field: 1) the isolation of microbial DNA from environmental samples using a biological extraction field kit, and 2) the analysis of DNA via the field qPCR unit.

Source: Yong P. Chen, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, College of Science, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN An electric field is generated by a charged object (referred to as the source charge) in the space around it, and represents the ability to exert electric force on another charged object (referred to as the test charge). Represented by a vector at any given point in the space, the electric field is the electrical force per unit test charge placed at that point (the force...

Source: Yong P. Chen, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, College of Science, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN Magnetic fields can be generated by moving charges, such as an electrical current. The magnetic field generated by a current can be calculated from the Maxwell equation. In addition, magnetic objects such as bar magnets can also generate magnetic fields due to microscopic dynamics of charges inside the material. Magnetic fields will exert magnetic force on other moving...
