Galvanic Skin Response

Galvanic skin response (GSR), also called electrodermal activity, measures changes in skin conductance associated with sympathetic nervous system activity and provides a physiological indicator of arousal. Sensors apply a small electrical current across the skin, typically on the fingers or palms, where sweat gland activity alters moisture and therefore electrical resistance. In marketing research, GSR can complement surveys and behavioral data by tracking arousal during advertisements, product experiences, or brand interactions, helping researchers identify moments that capture attention or generate emotional activation. Because GSR does not reveal whether a response is positive or negative, researchers interpret it alongside other measures and contextual evidence.
