Flipping Figures

Flipping figures is a geometric transformation that reflects a shape across a line, helping students analyze symmetry, position, and congruence. During a flip, each point moves to the opposite side of the line of reflection while remaining the same perpendicular distance from it, preserving the figure’s size and shape but reversing its orientation. In mathematics, this transformation supports work with coordinate geometry, transformations, and line symmetry. Comparing an original figure with its image helps learners predict coordinates, identify invariant properties, and understand how rigid motions relate shapes without changing their dimensions.

Uncertainty in Measurement: Significant Figures

2020

All the digits in a measurement, including the uncertain last digit, are called significant figures or significant digits. Note that zero may be a measured value; for example, if a scale that shows weight to the nearest pound reads “140,” then the 1 (hundreds), 4 (tens), and 0 (ones) are all significant (measured) values. A measurement result is properly reported when its significant digits accurately represent the certainty of the measurement process. Below are a set of rules to determine the...

We demonstrate a simple method for placing cells at desired locations on a substrate. This method patterns cells by flipping a silicone chip containing microwells filled with cells onto the substrate. This method provides a new way to modulate diffusible and juxtacrine signaling between cells.

Rules for Significant Figures

In any measurement, the precision of the measuring tool is an essential factor. An ordinary ruler, for example, can measure length to the closest millimeter; a caliper, on the other hand, can measure length to the nearest 0.01 mm. As a result, the caliper is a more precise measurement tool because it can measure extremely minute changes in length. The measurements will be more accurate if the measuring tool is more precise. It should be emphasized that when we represent measured values, the...

Significant Figures in Calculations

Uncertainty in measurements can be avoided by reporting the results of a calculation with the correct number of significant figures. This can be determined by the following rules for rounding numbers: When adding or subtracting numbers, round the result to the same number of decimal places as the number with the least number of decimal places. When multiplying or dividing numbers, round the result to the same number of digits as the number with the least number of significant figures. If...
