Positive Negative Values

Positive and negative values are numbers that indicate position relative to zero, allowing mathematics to represent quantities above and below a reference point. On a number line, positive values lie to the right of zero and negative values to the left; their signs also guide operations, so adding a negative shifts a value downward, while multiplying values with unlike signs produces a negative result. This framework supports comparison, ordering, and calculation with integers, decimals, and other real numbers. It is essential for describing temperature changes, elevation, profit and loss, direction, and algebraic relationships in science and everyday problem-solving.

Positive, Negative, and Zero Work

Work is done on an object when energy is transferred to the object. In other words, work is done when a force acts on a body that undergoes a displacement from one position to another. By definition, the work done by a force is the integral of the force with respect to the displacement along its path. Forces can vary as a function of position, and displacements can occur along various paths between two points. The magnitude of a force multiplied by the cosine of the angle that the force makes...

Animal organs and organ systems constantly adjust to internal and external changes through a process called homeostasis ("steady state"). Examples of these changes include regulation of the level of glucose or calcium in the blood or internal responses to external temperatures. Homeostasis requires maintaining an internal dynamic equilibrium: Dynamic because it constantly adjusts to the changes that the body's systems encounter. Equilibrium because body functions are kept within specific...

Nurses are responsible for caring for patients during birth, death, illness, and healing. Professional values guide the decisions and actions that nurses make in their careers. If nurses know the decisions and actions to take, providing patients with exceptional care is possible. The values that are the foundation of the nursing profession are altruism, autonomy, human dignity, and social justice. First, altruism refers to the concern for the welfare and well-being of others without personal...
