Standardized Test Scores

Standardized test scores are numerical results from assessments administered and scored under consistent conditions, allowing performance to be compared across students, schools, or testing periods. In mathematics, scores typically derive from correct responses that are converted into a common scale, percentile rank, or proficiency level using established scoring procedures and reference groups. Educators and researchers use these results to evaluate mathematical knowledge, identify learning needs, guide placement, and assess instructional programs. Because scores capture performance on a defined assessment rather than every aspect of mathematical reasoning, they are most informative when interpreted alongside classroom work, teacher observations, and other measures.

Introduction to z Scores

2023

A z score (or standardized value) is measured in units of the standard deviation. It tells you how many standard deviations the value x is above (to the right of) or below (to the left of) the mean, μ. Values of x that are larger than the mean have positive z scores, and values of x that are smaller than the mean have negative z scores. If x equals the mean, then x has a zero z score. It is important to note that the mean of the z scores is zero, and the standard deviation is one. z scores help...

The Mouse Stroke Unit Protocol with Standardized Neurological Scoring for Translational Mouse Stroke Studies

2025

This article presents a protocol for executing the highly translational and independently proven mouse Stroke Unit (mSU) concept in large-stroke mice. It also provides a standardized protocol for executing the focal experimental stroke scale in mice, which evaluates stroke focal deficits detected even long-term.
