Birth Asphyxia

Birth asphyxia describes impaired oxygen delivery and carbon dioxide removal in a newborn before, during, or shortly after birth, making it a time-critical condition because it can injure the brain and other organs. Reduced gas exchange may produce hypoxemia, hypercapnia, and metabolic acidosis, while inadequate cerebral oxygenation can lead to hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. Clinicians evaluate breathing, circulation, blood gases, and neurologic status to guide immediate neonatal resuscitation and ongoing monitoring. Early recognition supports interventions such as assisted ventilation and, for selected infants, therapeutic hypothermia, improving the chances of limiting injury and informing long-term developmental care.

Large animal models have good translational values in the examination of physiology and pharmacology of neonatal asphyxia. Using newborn piglets, we develop an experimental protocol to simulate neonatal asphyxia which has advantages of studying the systemic and regional hemodynamics, oxygen transport with biochemical and pathologic pathways and correlations.

This manuscript describes the Research Prioritization by Affected Communities (RPAC) protocol and findings from its use with women at risk for preterm birth. Using the protocol, women identified and prioritized their unanswered questions about pregnancy, birth and neonatal care aimed at influencing research priority setting by funders and researchers.

Vasectomy is a surgical form of male sterilization that involves severing and sealing the vasa deferentia, preventing sperm from mixing with semen during ejaculation. Because a vasectomy does not impact the testes' ability to produce testosterone, hormone levels, libido, and sexual function generally remain unchanged. While vasectomy is highly effective in preventing pregnancy, with a success rate near 99.85%, rare cases of recanalization (spontaneous reconnection) can occur. Although vasectomy...

Preterm birth (delivery < 37 weeks) is an urgent global health issue with suboptimal prevention and treatment options. We present a mouse model of ascending vaginal bacterial infection-induced preterm birth and outline how to analyze the resulting neonatal morbidity and mortality.
