Blink Reflex

The blink reflex is an involuntary protective eye movement that rapidly closes the eyelids in response to corneal or facial stimulation, helping shield the eye from injury. Sensory signals travel mainly through the trigeminal nerve to brainstem interneurons, which activate the facial nerve and orbicularis oculi muscles; the response includes an early, rapid component and a later component that depends on bilateral brainstem pathways. In medicine, clinicians assess the blink reflex to evaluate cranial nerves V and VII, brainstem circuits, and lesions affecting sensory or motor pathways. Electrophysiological recording can support neurological diagnosis when routine examination findings are uncertain.

The Attentional Blink

2023

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University In order for recognition of a certain stimulus to take place, visual attention needs to be directed towards said stimulus. To the earliest parts of the visual system, objects are not objects, they are collections of visual features-lines, corners, changes in texture, color, and light. Attention is the resource that is necessary for later processing in order to recognize what a given bundle of features adds up to. This makes...

Neurodevelopmental Reflex Testing in Neonatal Rat Pups

2017

Behavioral testing is the gold standard for determining outcomes following brain injury, and can identify the presence of developmental disabilities in infants and children. Neurodevelopmental reflexes are an early indicator of these abnormalities. A host of easily accomplished developmental reflex tests in the neonatal rodent were developed and described here.

Reflex Activity

2024

A reflex activity is an automatic, involuntary response to specific stimuli. It is a part of our survival mechanism, designed to protect us from potential harm. For example, when a bright light suddenly shines into our eyes, we instinctively close them or look away. This is a simple reflex activity orchestrated by the nervous system without conscious thought or effort. A reflex exam is a diagnostic procedure performed by a healthcare professional to evaluate the functionality of a patient's...

The Micturition Reflex

2024

Urination, or micturition involves the coordination of the bladder's detrusor muscle and two sphincters to ensure controlled bladder emptying. The process begins with bladder filling, where the bladder wall stretches as urine accumulates. This stretching activates the urine storage reflex, mediated by the sacral spinal segments and the pontine storage center. Efferent sympathetic impulses stimulate the detrusor muscle to relax and the internal urethral sphincter to contract, facilitating urine...

Early Reflexes During Infancy

2026

Early reflexes are automatic, involuntary responses to specific stimuli and provide information about neurological development during infancy. Some reflexes are present at birth or appear soon afterward. Known as primitive reflexes, they support early survival and adaptation.Primitive ReflexesPrimitive reflexes help newborns respond to their environment before voluntary motor control develops. The rooting reflex causes an infant to turn toward stimulation near the mouth, helping the infant...
