Diarrhea Duration

Diarrhea duration describes how long frequent, loose, or watery stools persist and helps classify the condition and guide medical evaluation. Acute diarrhea typically lasts less than 14 days, persistent diarrhea continues for 14–30 days, and chronic diarrhea lasts longer than four weeks; these patterns may reflect infection, medication effects, inflammation, or impaired intestinal absorption. Ongoing fluid and electrolyte loss can lead to dehydration, particularly in infants, older adults, and people with underlying illness. Understanding duration supports decisions about hydration, testing, treatment, and referral while helping clinicians identify when persistent symptoms may signal a broader gastrointestinal disorder.

Source: Nag, D., et.al. Quantifying Vibrio cholerae Colonization and Diarrhea in the Adult Zebrafish Model. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)This video demonstrates the inoculation of adult zebrafish with a pathogenic Vibrio cholerae strain to study intestinal colonization and disease outcomes. It shows how bacterial toxins disrupt intestinal integrity, leading to fluid leakage, mucus secretion, and watery diarrhea before the fish are prepared for further analysis.

Drugs for Treatment of Diarrhea-Predominant IBS

2024

Diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D) is a subtype of IBS characterized primarily by frequent, loose, or watery stools, abdominal pain, and abdominal discomfort. Therapeutic approaches to managing IBS-D include dietary changes, stress management techniques, and pharmaceutical interventions. Two specific drugs used in the treatment are alosetron (Lotronex) and eluxadoline (Viberzi). Alosetron, a 5-HT3 antagonist, works by slowing the movement of stools in the gut, reducing bowel...

A lengthening in meal duration represents orofacial nociceptive behavior in rodents similar to the guarding behavior of humans with orofacial pain. Eating is a behavior that requires no training or animal manipulation, requires cortical participation, and is not competing with other experimentally induced behaviors, distinguishing this assay from alternative reflex or operant measurements.
