Gross Motor Function

Gross motor function is the ability to control large muscle groups to perform whole-body movements such as sitting, standing, walking, running, and jumping. It develops through coordinated activity in the brain, spinal cord, nerves, muscles, and sensory systems, which regulate posture, balance, strength, timing, and motor planning. In medicine, clinicians assess gross motor function to monitor development, identify movement impairments, and evaluate conditions such as cerebral palsy, neuromuscular disease, stroke, and traumatic injury. Standardized examinations and functional scales can guide rehabilitation, track changes over time, and measure responses to physical therapy, assistive devices, or other interventions.
