Herbal Powder Assessment

Herbal powder assessment is the systematic evaluation of powdered plant materials to verify their identity, quality, purity, and suitability for medicinal use. It combines macroscopic and microscopic examination with physicochemical testing, such as measuring moisture content, ash values, extractive yield, and particle characteristics, while chemical analysis can help identify marker compounds or detect adulteration. These assessments support quality control by revealing contamination, substitution, degradation, or inconsistent composition before products reach patients. In medicine, standardized herbal powder evaluation strengthens safety, reproducibility, regulatory compliance, and confidence in research involving traditional and plant-based therapies.

Here, we present the preparation of an er-xian decoction (EXD) in four steps—soaking, decoction, filtration, and concentration—and demonstrate the administration of a prepared EXD-containing serum to rats. These methods are applicable to the in vivo and in vitro study of herbal decoctions such as traditional Chinese medicines.

Source: Tamara M. Powers, Department of Chemistry, Texas A&M University X-ray crystallography is a technique that uses X-rays to study the structure of molecules. X-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments are routinely carried out with either single-crystal or powdered samples. Single-crystal XRD: Single-crystal XRD allows for absolute structure determination. With single-crystal XRD data, the exact atomic positions can be observed, and thus bond lengths and angles can be determined. This...

Source: Kerry M. Dooley and Michael G. Benton, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA Surface area and pore size distribution are attributes used by adsorbent and catalyst manufacturers and users to ensure quality control and to determine when products are at the end of their useful lives. The surface area of a porous solid is directly related to its adsorption capacity or catalytic activity. The pore size distribution of an adsorbent or catalyst is...
