Impedance Field Telemetry

Impedance field telemetry is a specialized approach that measures electrical impedance across a spatially distributed biological region and communicates the resulting data for analysis. It works by applying low-level electrical signals through sensors or electrodes, recording how tissue-dependent resistance and reactance vary across locations or over time, and transmitting those measurements to a receiving system. In medicine, these data can support noninvasive monitoring of physiological changes, device function, or tissue condition. By combining bioimpedance sensing with telemetry, the approach may enable continuous observation while reducing the need for direct access or repeated clinical measurements.

Here we present a protocol to conduct repeated impedance telemetry measurements during cochlear implantation (CI). They may allow conclusions on the electrode's and implant's function. Repeated impedance measurements enable objective feedback on whether the electrode is positioned inside the perilymph or outside the inner ear.

Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Electrical resistance is the ability of an electrical circuit element to resist the flow of electricity. Resistance is defined by Ohm's Law: (Equation 1) Where is the voltage and is the current. Ohm's law is useful for determining the resistance of ideal resistors. However, many circuit elements are more complex and can't be described by...

The electrode-tissue interface of neural recording electrodes can be characterized with electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). Application of voltage biasing changes the electrochemical properties of the electrode-tissue interface and can improve recording capability. Voltage biasing, EIS, CV, and neural recordings are complementary.
