Intrauterine Pregnancy

Intrauterine pregnancy is a pregnancy in which the fertilized egg implants and develops within the uterine cavity, the normal location for gestation. After fertilization, the early embryo travels through the fallopian tube, attaches to the prepared endometrium, and forms a gestational sac, placenta, and supporting tissues while hormonal signals, including human chorionic gonadotropin and progesterone, sustain development. In medicine, identifying an intrauterine pregnancy through clinical assessment and ultrasound helps evaluate early gestational development, estimate pregnancy age, and distinguish a normal implantation from ectopic pregnancy. This assessment guides prenatal care and supports timely management when complications arise.

Mild intrauterine hypoperfusion was produced by artery stenosis with metal microcoils wrapped around the uterine and ovarian arteries in rats at embryonic day 17. This procedure produced prenatal hypoperfusion and intrauterine growth restriction.

High-frequency Ultrasonography Based Early Pregnancy Characterization: A Technique to Study Embryo Implantation and Pregnancy Progression in Pregnant Murine Model

Mice are widely used to study gestational biology. However, pregnancy termination is required for such studies which precludes longitudinal investigations and necessitates the use of large numbers of animals. Therefore, we describe a non-invasive technique of high-frequency ultrasonography for early detection and monitoring of post-implantation events in the pregnant mouse.
