Jugular Catheter Implantation

Jugular catheter implantation is a medical procedure that places a flexible catheter into the internal jugular vein to provide reliable access to the central venous circulation. Using anatomical landmarks or ultrasound guidance, clinicians advance the catheter through the jugular vein until its tip reaches a central position near the heart, allowing controlled delivery or sampling while reducing the need for repeated peripheral venipuncture. This central venous access supports intravenous medications, fluids, blood products, parenteral nutrition, and hemodynamic monitoring in critically ill or hospitalized patients. Proper sterile technique and confirmation of catheter position help limit complications such as infection, bleeding, thrombosis, and pneumothorax.

In this video, we have demonstrated a step-by-step procedure of pulmonary artery catheterization by inserting an intravascular catheter through jugular vein and reach the pulmonary artery to measure the cardiac chamber pressure in porcine model.

Catheter Based Intravenous Injection of Experimental Agents: A Technique for Delivering Experimental Agents Intravenously Through Jugular Vein in Mouse Model

In this video, we describe a method for implanting a catheter into the jugular vein of a mouse model through which experimental agents such as drugs and tracer dyes can be delivered intravenously in vivo. Such an arrangement when connected to other systems can also be used for monitoring hemodynamics and blood sampling.

Source: James W Bonz, MD, Emergency Medicine, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut, USA Central venous access is necessary in a multitude of clinical situations for hemodynamic monitoring, medication delivery, and blood sampling. There are three veins in the body that are accessed for central venous cannulation: the internal jugular, the subclavian, and the femoral vein. Central venous access via the subclavian vein has several advantages over other possible locations. The subclavian...
