Proximal Arm Transplant

Proximal arm transplant is a form of vascularized composite allotransplantation that replaces a missing upper-limb segment near the shoulder or upper arm with a donor limb, restoring anatomy and potential function after severe injury or amputation. The procedure connects donor and recipient bones, muscles, tendons, nerves, arteries, and veins, while lifelong immunosuppressive therapy limits immune-mediated rejection of the transplanted tissues. Rehabilitation supports motor relearning and sensory recovery as repaired nerves regenerate and muscles are retrained. In medicine, this highly specialized approach can improve grasp, reach, body image, and independence when conventional prostheses provide inadequate function, while advancing reconstructive surgery and transplantation research.
