Valve Prosthesis Implantation

Valve prosthesis implantation is a medical procedure that replaces a damaged or diseased heart valve with an artificial prosthesis to restore effective, one-way blood flow through the heart. Depending on the valve and patient’s condition, clinicians may implant a mechanical or bioprosthetic valve through open-heart surgery or a catheter-based approach, positioning it to regulate blood flow between cardiac chambers or into the major arteries. The procedure can relieve symptoms caused by stenosis or regurgitation, improve cardiac function, and reduce complications associated with progressive valve disease. Prosthesis selection, procedural planning, and long-term follow-up help guide anticoagulation, durability assessment, and patient outcomes.

Internal lung surface area (ISA) is a critical criterion for assessing lung morphology and physiology in lung diseases and injury-induced alveolar regeneration. We describe here a standardized method that can minimize the measurement bias for ISA in both lung pneumonectomy and prosthesis implantation mouse models.

Full-root aortic valve replacement by stentless aortic xenograft is a viable option in patients with small aortic roots. We describe, a technique for the full-root implantation of stentless aortic xenografts, with emphasis on the management of the proximal suture line and coronary anastomoses, and discuss its limitations and alternative options.

Standardized Technique of Aortic Valve Re-implantation for Valve-sparing Aortic Root Replacement

2017

Valve-sparing aortic root replacement has the advantage of preserving the patient's own aortic valve. The complexity of the reported techniques to date restricts their use to a limited number of cardiac surgeons. This protocol describes step-by-step a standardized technique reproducible by a greater number of cardiac surgeons.
