Apnea Severity Assessment

Apnea severity assessment is the clinical and physiological evaluation of how often and how strongly breathing stops or becomes markedly reduced, most commonly during sleep. In sleep research and neuroscience, clinicians use polysomnography or related monitoring to record airflow, respiratory effort, blood oxygen saturation, and brain activity, then calculate measures such as the apnea-hypopnea index, which relates respiratory events to hours of sleep. These measurements help distinguish mild, moderate, and severe sleep-disordered breathing, reveal effects on oxygenation and sleep architecture, and guide diagnosis, treatment selection, and evaluation of neurological and cardiovascular consequences.

Sleep Apnea

2024

Sleep apnea is a condition where breathing stops intermittently during sleep, often leading to significant health issues. Each episode can last from 10 to 20 seconds or more and is frequently accompanied by a brief arousal from sleep. This disturbance, largely unnoticed by the individual, can lead to severe daytime fatigue. Commonly, individuals seek help after being informed by their partners about loud snoring and noticeable breathing pauses during sleep. The condition is more prevalent among...

Bronchial Thermoplasty: A Novel Therapeutic Approach to Severe Asthma

2010

Bronchial thermoplasty is a non-drug procedure for severe persistent asthma that delivers thermal energy to the airway wall in a precisely controlled manner to reduce excessive airway smooth muscle. Reducing airway smooth muscle decreases the ability of the airways to constrict, thereby reducing the frequency of asthma attacks.
