Atypical Handling Patterns

Atypical handling patterns are unusual or inconsistent behavioral responses observed when an organism is restrained, transferred, touched, or otherwise handled during neuroscience research, and they matter because handling can alter experimental measurements. Such responses may arise when sensory input and perceived threat engage stress-related neural and autonomic pathways, producing changes in movement, posture, exploration, arousal, or task performance. Recognizing these patterns helps researchers distinguish handling effects from the neural phenomenon under study, improve protocol standardization, and reduce confounding variability. Careful observation and consistent procedures can also support animal welfare while strengthening the reproducibility and interpretation of behavioral and neurophysiological experiments.

Atypical Pneumonia

2026

Atypical pneumonia, often caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae, is a form of pulmonary infection that differs from the classical presentation of bacterial pneumonia in both its cause and clinical symptoms. Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a pleomorphic bacterium notable for its lack of a rigid cell wall. This structural characteristic imparts resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics and significantly influences the bacterium’s behavior within the human host.Other pathogens responsible for the disease include...

The Vermicelli and Capellini Handling Tests of forepaw dexterity take advantage of the natural inclination of rodents to manipulate food items using skillful forepaw and digit movements. Animals are videotaped while handling short strands of uncooked dry pasta. Slow motion video playback allows for the quantification of forepaw adjustments.

Assessment of the EEG mu rhythm provides a unique methodology for examining brain activity and when combined with behaviorally based assays, can be a powerful tool for elucidating aspects of social cognition, such as imitation, in clinical populations.

Antipsychotic Drugs: Typical and Atypical Agents

2024

Antipsychotic drugs are classified into first-generation (typical) drugs including phenothiazines; and second-generation (atypical) drugs. Chlorpromazine hydrochloride (Thorazine), a phenothiazine derivative, broadly impacts the central, autonomic, and endocrine systems. This drug, along with typical agents like haloperidol (Haldol), primarily works by antagonizing D2 receptors, thus reducing dopaminergic neurotransmission. However, typical antipsychotics can cause side effects such as sedation...
