Bone Screw Placement

Bone screw placement is a surgical technique for anchoring hardware to bone, providing stable fixation in procedures that protect or reconstruct neurological structures. The process involves selecting an appropriate screw and trajectory, preparing a pilot hole when needed, and advancing the screw with controlled torque to obtain secure purchase while avoiding nearby nerves, blood vessels, and intracranial tissue. In neurosurgery, bone screws help secure cranial plates, fixation systems, stereotactic frames, and other implants. Accurate placement supports mechanical stability, promotes reliable healing, and reduces complications associated with hardware loosening, tissue injury, or malposition.

Source: Julianna Jung, MD, FACEP, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Maryland, USA For unstable patients requiring urgent administration of medications, fluids, or blood products, establishing vascular access quickly is essential. However, there are many factors that can complicate placement of a peripheral intravenous cannula (PIV), and it is extremely common for PIV attempts to fail. PIV placement may be technically challenging in small...

Source: Sharon Bord, MD, Department of Emergency Medicine, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Maryland, USA When monitoring patients, it is important to obtain values that are accurate and reliable. Blood pressure monitoring is one of the essential vital signs, and for a majority of patients, measuring it utilizing non-invasive techniques provides accurate values. However, there are situations in which the blood pressure requires more exact, specific, and reliable measurements.

Screw: Problem Solving

In mechanical engineering, the interaction between a threaded screw shaft and a plate gear involves analyzing the resisting torque on the plate gear that can be overpowered when a specific torsional moment is applied to the shaft. To better comprehend this concept, consider a generic situation with a threaded screw shaft with a given mean radius and lead and a plate gear with a specified mean radius. The coefficient of static friction between the screw and gear is also provided. To evaluate the...
