Dorsal Side Orientation

Dorsal side orientation is an anatomical reference that identifies the back or upper side of a nervous system structure, helping describe the position of neural tissues relative to the body’s axes. It is determined by the neuraxis and surrounding landmarks, with its interpretation changing across regions: dorsal generally indicates posterior in the spinal cord and superior in the brain, where the neuraxis bends. Neuroscientists use this orientation to label brain and spinal cord structures, interpret histological sections and neuroimaging data, and map neural pathways. Consistent dorsal-ventral coordinates also support comparisons of development, anatomy, lesions, and experimental findings across species.

Oriented Surfaces

2026

A surface is called orientable if a consistent choice of unit normal vector can be made at every point on the surface. A thin soap film stretched across a wire loop provides a familiar example. The film separates the air on one side from the air on the other, so one side can be selected as positive and the opposite side as negative. Once this choice is made, a unit normal vector can be assigned smoothly across the entire surface. At each point on the soap film, a unit normal vector points...

Location and Orientation of the Heart

2024

The human heart, despite its modest size and weight, is an organ of remarkable strength and endurance. Roughly the size of a fist, the heart weighs between 250 and 350 grams and is nestled within the mediastinum, the medial cavity of the thorax. It extends obliquely for about 12 to 14 cm, resting on the superior surface of the diaphragm. The heart is positioned anterior to the vertebral column and posterior to the sternum, with two-thirds of its mass lying to the left of the midsternal line.

2017

This protocol presents the use of a dorsal root ganglion (DRG) injection with a viral vector and a concurrent dorsal root crush injury in an adult rat as a model to study sensory axon regeneration. This model is suitable for investigating the use of gene therapy to promote sensory axon regeneration.

Source: Cheah, M., et al. Dorsal Root Ganglion Injection and Dorsal Root Crush Injury as a Model for Sensory Axon Regeneration. J. Vis. Exp. (2017).This video demonstrates a step-by-step procedure for injecting a viral suspension into the dorsal root ganglia (DRGs) and inducing a controlled axonal injury via a dorsal root crush in an anesthetized rat. The protocol involves exposing the DRGs, delivering a growth-promoting viral vector to facilitate axonal regeneration, and severing axonal...

Patient-specific Modeling of the Heart: Estimation of Ventricular Fiber Orientations

A methodology to estimate ventricular fiber orientations from in vivo images of patient heart geometries for personalized modeling is described. Validation of the methodology performed using normal and failing canine hearts demonstrate that that there are no significant differences between estimated and acquired fiber orientations at a clinically observable level.
