Environmental Enrichment

Environmental enrichment is the deliberate modification of an animal’s surroundings to provide greater sensory, motor, cognitive, and social stimulation, making it an important tool for studying how experience shapes the brain. In neuroscience research, enriched environments may include novel objects, opportunities for physical activity, and social interaction, which engage neural circuits involved in learning, motivation, and adaptation. Researchers use this approach to examine experience-dependent plasticity, including changes in behavior and brain function, and to compare enriched conditions with standard laboratory housing. Environmental enrichment also supports research on development, stress, aging, and neurological disorders by revealing how environmental conditions influence resilience, recovery, and disease-related outcomes.

2026

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Environmental enrichment involves objects and practices that encourage natural behaviors, improve psychological well-being, and promote better welfare in laboratory rodents. Environmental enrichment should be tailored to the...

Environmental enrichment provides a potential protective effect against neurodegenerative disorders. Currently, however, there is no easy way of determining the efficacy of enrichment procedures. This protocol describes a simple “Puzzle Box” method for assessing an animal’s cognitive function, in order to reveal the effectiveness of environmental enrichment.

Stool Microbial DNA Isolation: Studying the Effect of Environmental Enrichment on Microbiome Diversity in Murine Tumor Model

2023

This video describes DNA isolation protocol from stool samples of colon tumor-bearing mice. The extracted DNA is amplified using PCR, and the product is further cleaned using a magnetic beads-based approach. This method can be used to determine the effect of environmental enrichment on colon microbiota and animal mortality.
