Hand Stimulation

Hand stimulation is the controlled activation of sensory receptors in the hand to investigate how the nervous system detects, encodes, and responds to touch. Mechanical inputs such as pressure, vibration, or movement activate cutaneous and proprioceptive receptors, sending signals through peripheral nerves and the spinal cord to somatosensory regions of the brain. In neuroscience, researchers use hand stimulation to measure sensory thresholds, map cortical representations, and study perception, motor control, and sensorimotor integration. These approaches also support research on neuroplasticity, rehabilitation after injury, and the design of prosthetic or robotic systems that provide meaningful tactile feedback.

A Novel Scalp Acupuncture-based Method to Target the Hand Motor Hotspot for Non-invasive Brain Stimulation

2025

This protocol introduces a scalp acupuncture-based method for localizing the primary motor cortex (M1) hotspot for the flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) muscle and validates its effectiveness against the conventional C3 site.

The Rubber Hand Illusion

2023

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Reaching for objects, walking without hitting obstacles, landing on a chair as you sit (instead of falling to the floor), these and all our physical actions depend on an ability to perceive our own bodies in space, to know where our limbs are relative to one another and relative to the rest of the world. One way that the human brain encodes this information is called proprioception, the brain relies on its own control and feedback...

2021

We present a suite of standardized single- and paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) recording protocols, with options for conventional amplitude measurements and threshold-tracking. This program can control three different types of magnetic stimulators and is designed to enable all tests to be performed conveniently by a single operator.
