Myelin Debris Phagocytosis

Myelin debris phagocytosis is the cellular process by which damaged myelin is recognized, engulfed, and degraded after nervous system injury, helping regulate inflammation and tissue repair. In the central nervous system, microglia and infiltrating macrophages bind debris through receptors for lipid and injury-associated signals, internalize it into phagosomes, and digest it after fusion with lysosomes; clearance is influenced by the inflammatory environment and inhibitory myelin components. Studying this process helps explain how debris removal affects axon regeneration and remyelination, with applications in research on multiple sclerosis, traumatic neural injury, and therapies designed to improve nervous system repair.

In this video, we evaluate the phagocytic capacity of purified astrocytes in vitro by live imaging assay. The assay serves as an effective screening platform to identify chemical compounds that can enhance or inhibit the phagocytic capacity of astrocytes.

An In Vitro Assay to Measure Antibody-Dependent Cellular Phagocytosis by Phagocytes

This video demonstrates an assay to measure the antibody-dependent cellular phagocytosis (ADCP) by breast milk phagocytes. Fluorescently labeled microspheres conjugated to an antigen-antibody complex, are combined with a cell suspension isolated from breast milk to induce antibody-dependent cellular phagocytosis by the phagocytic leukocytes. Upon labeling the cells with antibodies against common leukocyte antigen (CD45), flow cytometry is used to measure the fluorescence intensity of...
