Tms Effects

TMS effects are the changes in brain activity, neural excitability, and behavior produced by transcranial magnetic stimulation, a noninvasive technique that uses magnetic fields to influence targeted cortical regions. A rapidly changing current in a stimulation coil generates a magnetic field that passes through the skull and induces electrical currents in underlying neurons; the pattern, intensity, and repetition of pulses help determine whether excitability is temporarily increased or reduced. In neuroscience, studying TMS effects reveals causal links between brain regions and functions such as movement, perception, and cognition, while supporting research into neural plasticity and potential treatments for neurological and psychiatric disorders.

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that involves passing current through an insulated coil placed against the scalp. A brief magnetic field is created by current in the coil, and because of the physical process of induction, this leads to a current in the nearby neural tissue. Depending on the duration, frequency, and magnitude of these magnetic...

Auditory processing is the basis of speech and music-related processing. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) has been used successfully to study cognitive, sensory and motor systems but has rarely been applied to audition. Here we investigated TMS combined with functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging to understand the functional organization of auditory cortex.
