Tungsten Pin Mounting

Tungsten pin mounting is a neuroscience preparation technique that uses rigid, fine tungsten pins to secure a neural specimen or experimental subject for stable observation and measurement. The pins hold tissue or body regions in a defined position by penetrating or anchoring into a supporting material, while their stiffness and small diameter help limit movement without obstructing access to the nervous system. In some preparations, tungsten pins can also function as conductive contacts for recording or stimulation when electrically connected to the appropriate instrumentation. This approach supports reproducible electrophysiology, microscopy, and behavioral experiments by improving mechanical stability and measurement consistency.

Euler's Formula for Pin-Ended Columns

2024

In structural engineering, the stability of columns under compressive axial loads is a critical consideration, described as buckling. A typical example involves a column PQ, which is pin-connected at both ends and subjected to a centric axial load F applied at one end, with a reaction force of F' = -F at the other end. Here, it is crucial to understand that when an applied load exceeds the critical load, buckling occurs as the system becomes unstable. To calculate the critical load, envision...

Reconfigurable Microfluidic Channel with Pin-discretized Sidewalls

2018

A microfluidic channel with deformable sidewalls offers flow control, particle handling, channel dimension customization and other reconfigurations while in use. We describe a method for fabricating a microfluidic channel with sidewalls made of an array of pins that allows their shape to change.
