Chronic Bronchitis

Chronic bronchitis is a long-term inflammatory condition of the bronchi, defined clinically by a productive cough lasting at least three months in two consecutive years, and it can impair airflow and breathing. Persistent irritant exposure, particularly tobacco smoke, promotes airway inflammation, excess mucus production, and thickening of bronchial walls, while impaired mucus clearance contributes to ongoing symptoms. In pharmacology, treatment focuses on reducing symptoms and exacerbations through inhaled bronchodilators that relax airway smooth muscle, with corticosteroids or phosphodiesterase-4 inhibitors used in selected patients. Understanding these mechanisms supports individualized therapy, improved lung function, and reduced disease burden.
