Constipation Relief Drugs

Constipation relief drugs are pharmacological agents that ease infrequent or difficult bowel movements by softening stool, increasing its water content, or promoting intestinal movement. Their mechanisms vary: bulk-forming agents retain water and expand stool, osmotic agents draw fluid into the intestinal lumen, and stimulant drugs increase intestinal contractions and secretion. These medicines support the management of occasional or persistent constipation, but their onset, effectiveness, and adverse effects differ by class. Understanding their pharmacology helps clinicians and patients select appropriate treatment, use these agents safely, and recognize when constipation may require evaluation for an underlying gastrointestinal disorder.

Drugs for Treatment of Constipation-Predominant IBS

2024

Pharmacological therapies for IBS-C are designed to alleviate abdominal discomfort and enhance bowel function. In patients with IBS-C, fiber supplements may help soften stools and decrease straining, but may also lead to increased gas production and bloating. Osmotic laxatives like milk of magnesia are frequently used to soften stools and increase stool frequency in IBS-C patients. In addition, two drugs approved for use in severe IBS-C adult cases are linaclotide (Linzess) and lubiprostone...

2019

A validated computerized battery of neuropsychological and neurophysiological tests is used to study pharmacodynamic effects on the central nervous system of newly developed drugs in early phase development. To demonstrate the test battery, the acute effects of mecamylamine and the reversal of these effects by two agonist drugs are described.

Drug toxicity: Drug–Drug Interaction

2026

Drug–drug interactions can precipitate toxicity through multiple mechanisms. Absorption interactions alter how drugs enter the body, exemplified when ranitidine increases the absorption of basic drugs, while cholestyramine decreases the levels of propranolol. Protein binding interactions occur when drugs share the same binding sites on plasma proteins. Drugs like aspirin and warfarin, when bound in excess, can lead to increased free drug concentrations, enhancing the potential for...
