Diarrhea Treatment

Diarrhea treatment encompasses measures that restore fluid balance, relieve symptoms, and address the underlying cause of excessive or frequent loose stools. In pharmacology, oral rehydration solutions use glucose-coupled sodium transport in the intestinal epithelium to promote water absorption, while selected agents reduce intestinal motility or secretion; antimicrobial therapy is reserved for specific infectious causes. Treatment choice depends on severity, duration, etiology, age, and clinical risk, with rehydration remaining central to preventing dehydration and electrolyte disturbances. Understanding these mechanisms supports safer management of acute and persistent diarrhea and guides appropriate drug use while avoiding unnecessary or potentially harmful therapy.

2024

Diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D) is a subtype of IBS characterized primarily by frequent, loose, or watery stools, abdominal pain, and abdominal discomfort. Therapeutic approaches to managing IBS-D include dietary changes, stress management techniques, and pharmaceutical interventions. Two specific drugs used in the treatment are alosetron (Lotronex) and eluxadoline (Viberzi). Alosetron, a 5-HT3 antagonist, works by slowing the movement of stools in the gut, reducing bowel...

Source: Nag, D., et.al. Quantifying Vibrio cholerae Colonization and Diarrhea in the Adult Zebrafish Model. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)This video demonstrates the inoculation of adult zebrafish with a pathogenic Vibrio cholerae strain to study intestinal colonization and disease outcomes. It shows how bacterial toxins disrupt intestinal integrity, leading to fluid leakage, mucus secretion, and watery diarrhea before the fish are prepared for further analysis.
