Intravenous Catheterization

Intravenous catheterization is a technique for inserting a flexible catheter into a vein, creating direct vascular access for delivering medications, fluids, or blood products. After venipuncture with a needle, the catheter advances into the vessel while the needle is removed, allowing controlled administration through an infusion line or syringe. In pharmacology, this route provides rapid systemic drug exposure, precise dosing, and reliable delivery when oral absorption is inadequate or immediate treatment is required. It supports medication administration, fluid therapy, blood sampling, and pharmacokinetic studies, while requiring careful technique to reduce complications such as infiltration, infection, phlebitis, and accidental dislodgment.

Source: Madeline Lassche, MSNEd, RN and Katie Baraki, MSN, RN, College of Nursing, University of Utah, UT Intravenous (IV) fluid administration and peripheral IV catheters (PIVs) may be discontinued for a number of reasons. The most common reason for discontinuing IV fluids is that the patient has returned to normal body fluid volume (euvolemia) and is able to maintain adequate oral fluid intake or is being discharged from the hospital. In addition, the Centers for Disease Control Guidelines...

Catheter Based Intravenous Injection of Experimental Agents: A Technique for Delivering Experimental Agents Intravenously Through Jugular Vein in Mouse Model

2025

In this video, we describe a method for implanting a catheter into the jugular vein of a mouse model through which experimental agents such as drugs and tracer dyes can be delivered intravenously in vivo. Such an arrangement when connected to other systems can also be used for monitoring hemodynamics and blood sampling.

We describe a novel surgical method for catheterizing 'intestinal loops' within the ileum of sheep. Once animals have recovered from surgery and have cleared antibiotics and analgesics, multiple treatments can be deposited directly in loops via the catheters.

Right Heart Catheterization: An OverviewRight heart catheterization is an invasive diagnostic procedure that measures right-sided cardiac and pulmonary artery pressures, calculates cardiac output, and identifies intracardiac shunts. It provides detailed hemodynamic data essential for diagnosing and managing various cardiovascular conditions, such as pulmonary hypertension.Access SitesCommon access sites for right heart catheterization include the internal jugular vein in the neck region, the...

The use of domestic and miniature pigs in science has increased significantly in recent years. By demonstrating how to perform intubation, transurethral bladder catheterization, femoral artery and vein catheterization, as well as transcardial perfusion, we aim to further increase the value of Göttingen minipigs in biomedical research.
