Persistent Depressive Disorder

Persistent Depressive Disorder is a chronic mood disorder characterized by depressed mood and related symptoms lasting at least two years in adults, often affecting daily functioning, relationships, and quality of life. Its biological basis involves interacting changes in neurotransmitter signaling, stress-response systems, and neural circuits that regulate mood, although no single mechanism explains every case. In pharmacology, treatment commonly uses antidepressants that modulate serotonin, norepinephrine, or other signaling pathways, often alongside psychotherapy and behavioral support. Studying treatment response, adverse effects, and long-term symptom control helps guide individualized care and informs research into more effective therapies for chronic depression.

Depressive disorders are a group of mental health conditions characterized by pervasive feelings of sadness, diminished pleasure in life, and a significant impact on daily functioning. These conditions are most prevalent in individuals during their 30s and affect women at twice the rate of men. Contrary to popular belief, younger individuals are generally more susceptible to these disorders than older adults. Two key types of depressive disorders include Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and...

In Vitro Persister Assay: A Method to Evaluate the Effect of Osmolytes on Bacterial Persistence

In this video, we demonstrate a method to evaluate the effect of osmolytes on the formation of bacterial persisters. The bacterial cells are first exposed to osmolytes to induce osmotic stress, triggering persister formation, then treated with antibiotics to enumerate the persisters.

An Introduction to Modeling Behavioral Disorders and Stress

Recently, it has been discovered that behavioral conditions such as, depression, anxiety and stress-response have a neurological basis. Understanding the biological underpinnings of these conditions may help scientists in developing more effective therapies to treat these disorders. Typically, rodent models are used in this field and behavioral scientists create these models using interventions like drug administration or surgery. It is important to understand how to create and evaluate rodent...
