Four Temperaments

Four Temperaments is a historical personality framework that classifies individuals as sanguine, choleric, melancholic, or phlegmatic according to characteristic patterns of emotion, behavior, and interpersonal response. Originating in ancient humoral theory, the model linked temperament to the balance of bodily fluids, proposing that dominant humors shaped tendencies such as sociability, ambition, sensitivity, or calmness. Although modern psychology does not treat the four temperaments as a scientifically validated personality assessment, the framework influenced later theories of individual differences and remains useful for understanding the history of personality classification. Studying it also illustrates how psychological explanations can reflect the medical knowledge and cultural assumptions of their time.
