Minimum Value

Minimum value is the smallest numerical observation in a dataset, representing the lower endpoint of the recorded values and serving as a basic descriptive statistic. It is identified by comparing observations, either after sorting them in ascending order or by updating a running minimum as each value is examined; ties produce the same minimum, while missing or invalid entries require explicit handling. In statistics, the minimum helps summarize distributions, calculate the range with the maximum value, detect boundary conditions, and flag potential outliers or data-entry errors. Alongside measures such as the median and mean, it provides context for interpreting variability and data quality.

Local Maximum and Minimum Values

2026

In multivariable calculus, a function of two variables can exhibit local maximum or minimum values at certain points on its surface. A local maximum occurs when the function's value at a point is greater than at all nearby points, while a local minimum occurs when the function’s value is less than at all nearby locations. These points are referred to as local extrema and are of central importance in optimization problems.Local extrema are found at critical points, where the surface becomes...

Minimum Burning Pressures of Water-based Emulsion Explosives

2017

We present an apparatus based on hot-wire ignition in a pressurized enclosure and an associated methodology to measure the minimum pressure required to induce sustained combustion in water-based emulsion explosives. This method improves product characterization to allow one to use them more safely during pumping and mixing operations.

A Microtiter Plate Method to Assess the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration of an Antibiotic

2025

This video demonstrates a microtiter plate-based method for determining the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of test antibiotics against bacteria. Upon adding a suspension of the bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa to a microtiter plate containing serial dilutions of a test antibiotic, and an inhibitor of the production of pyomelanin by the bacteria, the optical density of the wells is measured to compute the minimum inhibitory concentration of the antibiotic, and the impact of the...
