La eficiencia de producción neta (NPE) es la eficiencia con la que los organismos asimilan energía en biomasa para el siguiente nivel trófico. Debido a las bajas tasas metabólicas y al menor gasto de energía en los procesos termorreguladores, el NPE de los ectotermos (animales de sangre fría) es 10 veces mayor que el de los endotermos (animales de sangre caliente). <h4>Eficiencia de producción neta</h4> La energía fluye a través de los ecosistemas, de un organismo a otro. Sin embargo, sólo la energía almacenada en un organismo en forma de biomasa está disponible como alimento para el siguiente nivel trófico. El resto de la energía se pierde con el tiempo en forma de calor como subproducto de los procesos metabólicos y los desechos excretados. La eficiencia con la que los organismos asimilan esta energía utilizable en biomasa se llama eficiencia de producción neta (NPE), o el porcentaje de energía almacenada en la biomasa que no se utiliza para la respiración. Por ejemplo, en un estudio de un ecosistema de matorral desértico, se descubrió que solo el 0,016 % de la energía producida por los productores primarios era asimilada por el tejido de pequeños mamíferos herbívoros y disponible para los carnívoros de este sistema. <h4>Endotermo vs Ectotermo</h4> Los endotermos, como las aves y los mamíferos, suelen tener una baja eficiencia de producción debido a las mayores cantidades de energía gastadas en mantener temperaturas corporales altas constantes y altas tasas metabólicas. Por otro lado, la NPE de los ectotermos es un orden de magnitud mayor debido a sus tasas metabólicas y comportamientos termorreguladores más bajos. Por tanto, un mamífero debe consumir más energía para asimilar la misma cantidad de biomasa que un reptil.

Net production efficiency shows how much energy organisms turn into biomass for the next trophic level. It focuses on the usable energy stored in body tissue, not the energy lost as heat or excreted wastes. This makes it a key idea for understanding energy flow through ecosystems.

As energy moves from one organism to the next, only biomass can serve as food for the next trophic level. The rest of the energy is used in metabolism and is lost over time. Net production efficiency, or NPE, is the percentage of stored biomass energy that is not used for respiration.

NPE is often much higher in ectotherms, or cold-blooded animals, than in endotherms, or warm-blooded animals. Ectotherms have lower metabolic rates and spend less energy on thermoregulation, so their NPE can be about 10 times higher. Endotherms like birds and mammals usually have lower production efficiencies because they use more energy to keep body temperature constant.

A desert scrub ecosystem gives one clear example of this energy loss. In that system, only 0.016% of the energy made by primary producers was later built into small herbivore mammal tissue and available to carnivores. Because mammals need more energy to store the same amount of biomass than reptiles do, a mammal must eat more to match the biomass a reptile could produce.
