A male has one X chromosome and one Y chromosome. A female has two X chromosomes. Because of this difference, a trait on the X chromosome can show up in a different way depending on the sex of the child.

Family examples often include traits such as color blindness. Studying these examples helps learners see how an X-linked trait can move through generations and why the pattern may appear uneven across a pedigree.
