Las moléculas con una transmitancia del 100% no absorben energía, por lo que solo las moléculas con valores de transmitancia más bajos producen espectros infrarrojos.
El espectro IR de un compuesto es el gráfico de la intensidad o el porcentaje de transmitancia frente al número de onda, donde el porcentaje de transmitancia es la ordenada y el número de onda es la abscisa.
Las señales descendentes en un espectro indican bandas de absorción a frecuencias específicas en números de onda. Por ejemplo, en el decano, los picos alrededor de 3000, 1465 y 1375 cm-1, significan absorción de energía a estas frecuencias.
Las señales de la izquierda indican radiaciones de alta energía y alta frecuencia, mientras que las de la derecha denotan radiaciones de baja energía y baja frecuencia.
Las bandas de absorción correspondientes a la mayoría de los grupos funcionales se encuentran por encima de 1500 cm-1 en la región de diagnóstico.
La región por debajo de 1500 cm-1 es la región de la huella dactilar, donde cada molécula muestra un patrón distintivo. Por ejemplo, el 1-butanol y el 2-butanol tienen grupos funcionales similares pero diferentes bandas de absorción en esta región.

IR Spectrum

Cuando la radiación infrarroja (IR) pasa a través de una molécula, los enlaces se estiran o doblan al absorber la radiación. Esta absorción crea el espectro de absorción de la molécula, que es la gráfica de su porcentaje de transmitancia versus número de onda.

La transmitancia se define como la proporción entre la potencia radiante que pasa a través de una muestra y la de la fuente de radiación. Al multiplicar la transmitancia por 100 se obtiene el porcentaje de transmitancia (%T), que varía entre 100% (sin absorción) y 0% (absorción completa). Cuando la radiación IR pasa a través de una molécula, el 100% de transmitancia indica que la molécula no ha absorbido ninguna energía. Por el contrario, los valores de porcentaje de transmitancia más bajos sugieren que la molécula ha absorbido algo de energía, lo que nos permite obtener el espectro IR. Cada pico que apunta hacia abajo en el espectro se denomina banda de absorción. Por lo general, la posición de la banda de absorción en el espectro IR se informa mediante valores de número de onda o frecuencia. En el espectro IR, los valores de número de onda varían de 400 a 4000 cm−1.

En el espectro IR, las señales del lado izquierdo corresponden a radiaciones de mayor energía y mayor frecuencia, mientras que las del lado derecho denotan radiaciones de baja energía y baja frecuencia. Según la forma y la intensidad, estas señales se clasifican como fuertes, medias, débiles, anchas o agudas.

El espectro IR se puede dividir en dos regiones principales. La región del grupo funcional o región de diagnóstico es la porción de dos tercios izquierdos del espectro. Las bandas de absorción correspondientes a la mayoría de los grupos funcionales se pueden observar en esta área. El lado derecho del espectro se conoce como la región de la huella digital. De manera similar a la huella digital de los individuos, esta región es única para cada compuesto. Infrared (IR) spectroscopy shows how a molecule responds when IR radiation passes through it. The bonds in the molecule stretch or bend as they absorb that energy. This creates an absorption spectrum, which plots percent transmittance against wavenumber.

Transmittance is the ratio of radiant power that passes through a sample to the radiant power from the source. When transmittance is multiplied by 100, it becomes percent transmittance, or %T. %T ranges from 100% for no absorption to 0% for complete absorption. A 100% transmittance signal means the molecule has not absorbed energy, while lower %T values show that absorption has taken place.

The IR spectrum is usually read by looking at downward-pointing peaks called absorption bands. Their positions are reported with wavenumber or frequency values. In IR spectroscopy, wavenumber ranges from 400 to 4000 cm−1. Signals on the left side of the spectrum represent higher-energy, higher-frequency radiation, while signals on the right side represent lower-energy, lower-frequency radiation.

IR peaks are also described by their shape and intensity. They may be strong, medium, weak, broad, or sharp. The spectrum is divided into two main regions. The functional group region, also called the diagnostic region, is the left two-thirds of the spectrum. Most functional group bands appear there.

The right-hand side is the fingerprint region. Like a person’s fingerprint, it is unique to each compound. The diagnostic region mainly shows bond stretching vibrations. The fingerprint region includes more complex motions such as bond rocking, bending, and twisting. Even if two compounds share the same functional group, their fingerprint patterns can still differ because their chemical environments are not the same.
