Newton's Third Law: Examples

La tercera ley de Newton establece que toda acción tiene una reacción igual y opuesta. Esto se puede entender con ejemplos.
Si golpeas un clavo con un martillo, el clavo se hunde más profundamente en la madera debido a la fuerza de acción. En consecuencia, la fuerza debida al clavo empuja el martillo hacia atrás.
Considere a un hombre sentado en un sillón reclinable. Una fuerza debida a la gravedad actúa sobre él. El sillón reclinable ejerce una fuerza normal igual y opuesta que lo mantiene inmóvil.
Sin embargo, no se trata de un par de "acción-reacción", ya que las fuerzas actúan sobre el mismo cuerpo. La fuerza de gravedad ejercida por el hombre en la Tierra es el par de reacción a la atracción de la Tierra sobre él.

La tercera ley de Newton afirma que toda acción tiene una reacción igual y opuesta. Consideremos a un nadador empujando desde el lado de una piscina. Empuja contra la pared de la piscina con los pies y acelera en la dirección opuesta a la de su empuje. Esto ocurre porque la pared ejerce una fuerza igual y opuesta sobre el nadador. Aquí, las fuerzas no se cancelan entre sí, ya que actúan sobre diferentes sistemas. En este caso, hay dos sistemas: el nadador y la pared. Si seleccionamos al nadador como el sistema de interés, la fuerza de la pared sobre los pies es una fuerza externa en este sistema y afecta su movimiento. Por lo tanto, el nadador se mueve en la dirección de esta fuerza. En contraste, la fuerza de los pies sobre la pared actúa sobre la pared, no sobre nuestro sistema de interés. Newton's third law explains how forces come in pairs during motion. It says that every action has an equal and opposite reaction. In these examples, the two forces act on different systems, so they do not cancel each other out.

A swimmer pushing off the side of a pool shows this clearly. The swimmer pushes against the wall with their feet and then accelerates in the opposite direction. The wall pushes back with an equal and opposite force. If the swimmer is the system of interest, the wall's force on the feet is an external force that changes the swimmer's motion. The force of the feet on the wall acts on the wall, not on the swimmer, so it does not cancel the wall's force on the swimmer.

The swimmer moves opposite the direction of the push, but that is the direction they want to go. The reaction force is therefore useful in producing motion. The same pattern appears in other real situations.

A professor pacing in front of a whiteboard pushes backward on the floor. The floor pushes forward on the professor and helps the professor accelerate forward. When a person pulls down on a vertical rope, the rope pulls up on the person. Helicopters also use this law. They push air downward and experience an upward reaction force that creates lift.
