Circular Orbits and Critical Velocity for Satellites

Una bola empujada desde una torre con una cierta velocidad horizontal v0 caerá en un punto A bajo la influencia de la fuerza gravitacional de la Tierra.
Si una bola es empujada con mayor velocidad horizontal, caerá más lejos, en el punto B. Con un nuevo aumento de la velocidad, irá más allá del punto B y aterrizará en el punto C.
Sin embargo, a una cierta velocidad crítica vc, seguirá una órbita perfectamente circular alrededor de la Tierra. Si la velocidad aumenta por encima del valor crítico, la bola seguirá una órbita elíptica.
Por lo tanto, si un satélite orbita la Tierra con velocidad crítica, seguirá una trayectoria perfectamente circular alrededor de la Tierra, bajo la influencia de la fuerza gravitacional de la Tierra. Por lo tanto, la aceleración centrípeta de un satélite sería igual a su aceleración debida a la gravedad.

Orbital speed and period in circular paths explain how the Moon, planets, and satellites stay in motion around larger bodies. The Moon orbits Earth. Earth and the other planets orbit the Sun. The space above our atmosphere also contains many artificial satellites.

A circular orbit is the simplest orbit to study. It helps show how an object’s speed and its period, or the time for one full orbit, depend on where it is and what it circles. Nicolaus Copernicus first suggested that Earth and the other planets moved around the Sun in circles. He also noted that orbital periods increase with distance from the Sun.

Later, Johannes Kepler showed that planetary orbits are actually ellipses, or stretched circles. Even so, most orbits in the solar system are nearly circular. Earth’s distance from the Sun changes by only about 2%. Mercury is a major exception, since its orbit is much more eccentric and its orbital distance changes by nearly 40%.

A circular orbit happens when an object has the right tangential velocity. Tangential velocity is the sideways speed that keeps the object moving forward as gravity pulls it inward. In this case, Earth’s surface curves away at the same rate that the object falls toward Earth. Because of this simple balance, finding a satellite’s orbital speed and orbital period is much easier for circular orbits.
