Interference and Superposition of Waves

Cuando dos ondas están físicamente presentes en el mismo lugar, la perturbación resultante es una tercera onda. Este efecto se denomina interferencia.
Matemáticamente, la interferencia puede describirse mediante el principio de superposición. Establece que si dos o más ondas se superponen en el mismo punto, la onda resultante es la suma algebraica de las ondas individuales.
Al tomar la suma algebraica, se deben considerar tanto la amplitud como la fase.
Cuando dos ondas se superponen en un punto con la misma fase, la onda resultante tiene una amplitud igual a la suma de las amplitudes de la onda individual. Este fenómeno se denomina interferencia constructiva.
Por otro lado, cuando dos ondas se superponen en un punto con fases opuestas, la amplitud de la onda resultante es igual a la diferencia entre las amplitudes de las dos ondas individuales. Este fenómeno se denomina interferencia destructiva.
Cuando se producen interferencias constructivas y destructivas en regiones alternas, obtenemos un patrón de interferencia.

Cuando dos ondas de la misma naturaleza ocurren en la misma región simultáneamente, resulta en interferencia. La interferencia de las ondas implica que el efecto neto de las ondas es la suma de los efectos individuales de las ondas. Sin embargo, no implica que las ondas individuales afecten la propagación de otras ondas. La interferencia ocurre en ondas mecánicas, como las ondas de sonido, las ondas en una cuerda y las ondas de agua en la superficie. Las ondas mecánicas corresponden al desplazamiento físico de las partículas. Por lo tanto, la interferencia implica que el desplazamiento físico de las partículas de un medio se da por la suma algebraica de los desplazamientos que causan las ondas individuales. La interferencia también ocurre en otras ondas, como las ondas electromagnéticas, en cuyo caso los campos eléctrico y magnético se suman vectorialmente. Sin embargo, el principio de superposición no se aplica a ciertas ondas. Es decir, la onda resultante puede no ser una simple suma algebraica de las ondas individuales. En este caso, el efecto es no lineal, complicando la descripción del fenómeno. Estas ondas se denominan ondas no lineales. Bandas alternativas de interferencia constructiva y destructiva pueden dar lugar a patrones de interferencia, una firma concluyente de fenómenos ondulatorios que ocurren en la naturaleza. Wave interference patterns form when two waves of the same nature occupy the same region at the same time. The combined effect is the sum of the individual wave effects. Interference does not mean that one wave changes how the other wave travels.

This idea applies to mechanical waves, including sound waves, waves on a string, and surface water waves. Mechanical waves move through a medium, so interference shows up as the algebraic sum of particle displacements in that medium. The same principle also applies to electromagnetic waves, where the electric and magnetic fields add together vectorially.

Not every wave follows simple superposition. For some waves, the result is not just a direct sum of the separate waves. These are nonlinear waves, and their behavior is harder to describe.

Interference can create alternating bands of constructive and destructive interference. These bands form an interference pattern, which is a clear sign that wave behavior is present in nature.

Mechanical Waves in Air, Water, and Earth

Mechanical waves carry a disturbance through a medium. They repeat periodically and are often linked with simple harmonic motion. These waves follow Newton's laws and need a material medium to move through. A medium is the substance that carries the wave and provides an elastic restoring force when it is deformed. Water waves, sound waves, and seismic waves are examples of mechanical waves. In water waves, water is the medium. In sound waves, the medium is usually air, but it can also be water.

Wave motion can be described by a few key parameters. Simple mechanical waves repeat over several cycles and can be modeled with sine and cosine functions.
