Las moléculas activas por infrarrojos exhiben dos modos fundamentales de vibración que dan lugar a la absorción de infrarrojos.

IR Spectroscopy: Molecular Vibration Overview

Cuando la radiación infrarroja (IR) pasa a través de una molécula unida covalentemente, los enlaces pasan de niveles vibracionales más bajos a niveles vibracionales más altos. Los movimientos vibracionales fundamentales que resultan en la absorción infrarroja pueden clasificarse como vibraciones de estiramiento o flexión.

Las vibraciones de estiramiento son movimientos vibracionales que ocurren a lo largo de la línea de enlace, cambiando la longitud del enlace o la distancia entre dos átomos enlazados. Se distinguen además como simétricas o asimétricas. En el estiramiento simétrico, la vibración simultánea de dos enlaces se alarga y se contrae. Por el contrario, el estiramiento asimétrico implica que un enlace se mueve en una dirección mientras que otro enlace se mueve en la dirección opuesta.

A diferencia del estiramiento, las vibraciones de flexión no ocurren a lo largo de la línea de enlace; en cambio, cambian el ángulo de enlace. Las vibraciones de flexión se pueden dividir en flexión en el plano y flexión fuera del plano. Las vibraciones de flexión en el plano se clasifican como de tijera (simétricas) y oscilantes (asimétricas), mientras que las vibraciones de flexión fuera del plano se clasifican como de torsión (simétricas) y de meneo (asimétricas).

Para las moléculas no lineales, el número total de vibraciones fundamentales permitidas viene dado por la fórmula 3n − 6, donde n representa el número de átomos. En cambio, las moléculas lineales como el HBr solo permiten 3n − 5 vibraciones fundamentales. En el caso del HBr, solo es posible un tipo de vibración.

En espectroscopia IR, la frecuencia correspondiente a la excitación de los enlaces desde el estado fundamental hasta el estado excitado de menor energía se denomina frecuencia de absorción fundamental. Los múltiplos enteros de las frecuencias de absorción fundamentales se denominan armónicos. Cualquier vibración física genera armónicos en una molécula. La banda producida debido a la fusión de dos frecuencias vibratorias, que es activa en el infrarrojo, se denomina banda de combinación. En comparación, la banda resultante de la diferencia entre dos bandas se denomina banda de diferencia. Además, la resonancia de Fermi se refiere a la vibración acoplada creada por la interacción de la banda fundamental con la banda de sobretonos o de combinación.

IR spectroscopy explains how covalently bonded molecules absorb infrared radiation by moving to higher vibrational levels. The key motions are stretching and bending vibrations. These motions help describe how a bond responds when it absorbs IR energy.

Stretching vibrations happen along the bond line and change the distance between two bonded atoms. They can be symmetric, where two bonds lengthen and shorten together, or asymmetric, where one bond moves one way while another moves the opposite way. Bending vibrations do not occur along the bond line. Instead, they change the bond angle.

Bending vibrations are grouped into in-plane and out-of-plane motion. In-plane bending includes scissoring, which is symmetric, and rocking, which is asymmetric. Out-of-plane bending includes twisting, which is symmetric, and wagging, which is asymmetric.

The number of allowed fundamental vibrations depends on molecular shape. Nonlinear molecules have 3n − 6 fundamental vibrations, where n is the number of atoms. Linear molecules such as HBr have 3n − 5 fundamental vibrations, and HBr has only one possible vibration.

IR spectroscopy also uses terms for vibrational bands. The lowest-energy transition from the ground state is called the fundamental absorption frequency. Integral multiples of that frequency are overtones. A band formed by the fusion of two vibrational frequencies is a combination band, while a band from their difference is a difference band. Fermi resonance is the coupled vibration that occurs when a fundamental band interacts with an overtone or combination band.
