Checking breathing rate and oxygen levels helps assess how well a patient is breathing. Respiratory rate is the number of breaths taken in one minute. Oxygen saturation shows how much oxygen is being delivered to the body’s tissues. Together, these signs give a fuller picture of respiratory function.

The normal adult breathing rate is usually 12 to 20 breaths per minute. A lower rate may suggest respiratory depression or decreased oxygen levels. A rate above 20 breaths per minute may point to respiratory distress or an infection. Recording any change from the normal range helps healthcare providers spot possible health problems or a change in the patient’s condition.

To measure respirations accurately, watch the chest rise and fall. Count a full breath cycle, which includes both inhalation and exhalation. The best method is to count for one full minute. If time is limited, count for 30 seconds and multiply by two to estimate breaths per minute. Comfort matters during the check, so the patient should stay as calm as possible.

Breathing depth also matters during assessment. Shallow or very fast breaths can signal respiratory distress or poor ventilation. Listening with a stethoscope can also reveal wheezing or crackles. These sounds may point to lung conditions or congestion. Careful documentation of these findings supports better patient care.

Oxygen saturation is often checked with pulse oximetry, which uses a sensor to estimate oxygen levels. It can also be measured with arterial blood gas analysis. Respiratory rate shows how often a person breathes, while oxygen saturation shows how effective oxygen delivery is. Both measurements are important when evaluating breathing problems and deciding whether intervention is needed.
