Biot's breathing is irregular in both rate and depth. It alternates between deep gasping breaths and apnea, which is a pause in breathing. It may occur with increased intracranial pressure or damage to the brain's respiratory center, such as from stroke, head trauma, or spinal meningitis.

Cheyne-Stokes respiration follows a repeating cycle. Breathing starts slow and shallow, then gradually becomes faster and deeper. It then slows again, becomes shallow, and ends with apnea before the pattern starts over.
