Cellular Differentiation

Durante la diferenciación celular, las células no especializadas adquieren rasgos característicos, como la forma, el tamaño o la composición de las proteínas de la membrana, para realizar distintas funciones en el cuerpo.
Un óvulo fecundado o cigoto es altamente proliferativo y totipotente, es decir, puede diferenciarse para formar todos los tipos de células.
A medida que el cigoto sufre una serie de divisiones, las células hijas pierden su totipotencia y se diferencian para formar células especializadas en el embrión, como células musculares, neuronas, epidermis de la piel, células cardíacas y células hepáticas.
Aunque todas estas células del cuerpo contienen el mismo genoma, expresan ciertos genes mientras desactivan otros. Esto les permite sintetizar las proteínas necesarias para llevar a cabo funciones específicas de los tejidos.

Todo comienza con un único óvulo fertilizado que da origen a una amplia variedad de tipos de células, como células nerviosas, células musculares y células epiteliales que caracterizan al adulto. A lo largo del desarrollo y la edad adulta, la diferenciación celular lleva a las células a asumir su morfología y fisiología finales. La diferenciación es el proceso mediante el cual las células no especializadas se especializan para llevar a cabo funciones distintas.

Un cigoto es una célula madre totipotente con un alto potencial de diferenciación que puede formar todos los tipos de células y producir un organismo multicelular completamente nuevo. A medida que el cigoto experimenta divisiones celulares sucesivas, genera células madre pluripotentes (CMP) con un potencial de diferenciación más restringido. Las CMP dan origen a unas pocas células madre adultas que se dividen aún más y se diferencian de manera más terminal. Cuando una célula se diferencia, puede experimentar cambios significativos en tamaño, forma, actividad metabólica y función general.

Cellular differentiation turns unspecialized cells into specialized cells with specific jobs. This process helps a complex organism, such as a human, develop from a single fertilized egg into a body with many cell types. Nerve cells, muscle cells, and epithelial cells are examples of the final cell types that appear during development.

A zygote is the first cell after fertilization. It is a totipotent stem cell, which means it has very high differentiation potential and can form all cell types and even produce a whole new multicellular organism. As the zygote divides, it gives rise to pluripotent stem cells, or PSCs, which have a more limited ability to differentiate. PSCs then produce a few adult stem cells that keep dividing until they become more terminally differentiated.

As cells differentiate, they can change in size, shape, metabolic activity, and overall function. Even though the body’s cells contain the same DNA, each cell type only reads the parts of the DNA that are relevant to its role. This selective reading helps each cell become suited to its own job.

Hormones and signaling molecules can trigger differentiation. In response, specific genes are turned on while others are turned off. Transcription factors, which are proteins that bind to specific genes on DNA, control this switch by promoting or inhibiting transcription. The expression of the right genes leads to the proteins needed for a particular cell function and supports cellular differentiation.
