Los problemas de fricción seca se pueden clasificar en tres tipos.

Types of Friction Problems

La fricción es un concepto esencial en la física, la ingeniería y la vida cotidiana. Es la fuerza que se opone al movimiento relativo o la tendencia a dicho movimiento entre dos superficies en contacto. Uno de los tipos más comunes de fricción encontrados en diversas aplicaciones es la fricción seca. Los problemas de fricción seca pueden dividirse ampliamente en tres tipos, cada uno con características y desafíos únicos. El primer tipo de problema de fricción seca involucra situaciones en las que no hay un aparente movimiento inminente. Un ejemplo primordial de esto es cuando se aplica una fuerza a un cajón, pero permanece estacionario. Las fuerzas de fricción desarrolladas entre el suelo y el cajón se oponen a la fuerza aplicada y mantienen el cajón estacionario. Una vez que estos valores son calculados, se puede evaluar el ángulo más pequeño en el que se puede colocar la escalera sin que resbale. El tercer tipo de problema de fricción seca involucra situaciones en las que el movimiento inminente ocurre en algunos, pero no en todos, los puntos de contacto. Un ejemplo de este tipo de problema es un marco de dos elementos sometido a una fuerza horizontal desconocida. En este caso, el marco puede experimentar deslizamiento en un extremo mientras permanece estacionario en el otro. Para resolver este problema, se deben identificar las siete incógnitas involucradas: las fuerzas normales en ambos puntos de contacto, las fuerzas de fricción en ambos extremos, la fuerza horizontal aplicada y las fuerzas de reacción en los soportes. Se pueden utilizar seis ecuaciones de equilibrio y una de las dos posibles ecuaciones de fricción estática para determinar estas incógnitas. Resolver estas ecuaciones puede determinar la fuerza horizontal requerida para provocar el movimiento en el marco. Dry friction problems often focus on crates, ladders, and frames that are close to slipping. Dry friction is the force that resists relative motion, or the tendency for motion, between two surfaces in contact. In many physics and engineering problems, this force helps keep an object still or defines the point where motion is about to begin.

One common case has no clear impending motion. A force may be applied to a crate, but the crate stays at rest. The friction force between the floor and the crate opposes the applied force and keeps the crate stationary. To solve this kind of problem, the normal force, the friction force, and the applied force are the three unknowns. They can be found using the three equilibrium equations for the system.

A second type of problem reaches impending motion at every contact point. A ladder against a smooth wall is a good example. The ladder is just about to slip, and the goal is to find the smallest angle that still keeps it from sliding. This setup has four unknowns: the normal forces at both contact points, the friction force at the base, and the angle. The three equilibrium equations and one static friction equation are used to solve for these values.

A third type involves impending motion at some contact points, but not at others. A two-member frame with an unknown horizontal force is one example. The frame may slip at one end while the other end remains stationary. This case has seven unknowns, including the normal forces, the friction forces at both ends, the applied horizontal force, and the reaction forces at the supports. Six equilibrium equations and one of the two possible static friction equations are used to determine the force needed to start movement. As the applied force increases, the frame may slip on the left while the right side stays fixed, or the reverse may happen.
