Consider a gardener pushing a wheelbarrow. As a force is applied to move the cart, dry friction develops between the wheel and the ground.
The static frictional force acts tangential to the contact surface, opposite to the force about to cause a motion.
When the wheelbarrow is about to slip, the maximum static frictional force at the interface is proportional to the normal force. Here the coefficient of static friction depends on the types of materials in contact and the roughness of the surfaces.
The static frictional force is independent of the contact area only when the normal pressure is within a specific range that does not cause deformation or damage to the contacting surfaces.
When the wheelbarrow starts slipping, the developed kinetic frictional force is proportional to the normal force.
It is generally lower than the maximum static frictional force. However, if the cart moves with a very low velocity over the surface, they become approximately equal.
The coefficient of kinetic friction generally depends on the material&#39;s surface properties and the surrounding environment.

However, if the wheelbarrow moves at a very low velocity over the surface, the kinetic frictional force becomes approximately equal to the maximum static frictional force. This is because the slow movement allows for more interaction between the surfaces, leading to increased resistance.

Dry friction is the resistance between two solid surfaces that move against each other without lubrication or any fluid. A common example is a gardener pushing a wheelbarrow across the ground. The wheel and the ground create dry friction that slows the motion.

Before the wheelbarrow starts to move, static friction acts at the contact surface. Static friction is the force that opposes motion before slipping begins, and it helps keep the wheelbarrow stable. It is present only when there is no relative motion between the two surfaces.

As the wheelbarrow is about to slip, the maximum static friction depends on the normal force. The normal force is the push that surfaces exert on each other at the contact point. This maximum static friction is described by the coefficient of static friction, which depends on the materials in contact and on how rough their surfaces are.

Static friction also does not depend on contact area when the normal pressure stays within a range that avoids deformation or damage. So, even if the wheel and the ground touch over a larger or smaller area, the static friction can stay the same under those conditions. Once the wheelbarrow begins to slide, kinetic friction takes over.

Kinetic friction is the friction force during motion. It is also proportional to the normal force, but it is usually smaller than the maximum static friction. At very low speed, however, kinetic friction can become nearly equal to the maximum static friction because the surfaces have more time to interact.

The coefficient of kinetic friction mainly depends on surface properties and the surrounding environment. Temperature, humidity, and surface contamination can change its value.
